The vast majority of Manhattan residents don't own a car. They don't drive to work or around the city. Yet they are constantly forced to live with the problems of traffic in the city. Every walk down the street is a dodge through dangerous traffic. Horns and car alarms disturb them in their apartments each night. Cars dominate the streets and that means any bicyclist, roller blader, or pedestrian must be willing to risk permanent injury in order to use the streets. Every New Yorker suffers from the noise and tension that cars create.

Central Park was set aside as a refuge against the hussle and bussle of the city. A place where people could share a common space in peace and get away from the stressful traffic of the city. Drivers already have more than their fair share of the city. Non-drivers deserve their own place.
